Martial Arts Training Equipment

It may go without saying, but the main piece of equipment for a martial artist is their own body and a space to practice within (or without). Having said this, martial arts training equipment can enhance your overall training experience and also indicate whether or not you are using the correct attacking tools for your techniques. If you don’t know what I mean, try breaking a plastic board when your toes aren’t pulled back far enough!
So what do you need? Well, if you particpate in a martial art that has competition sparring, then you will definitely need a set of regulation sparring gear. Depending on your discipline, each code will require something different, but the main components will be a mouth guard, a head guard/helmet, gloves, a chest protector (depends on the level of contact), a groin guard for males, shin pads and boots. There are many different brands available and you can spend a lot of money on new gear or go for used equipment. (Take a look at the products available on this site to get an idea of price, styles and brands for both new and used gear).

If you particpate in full contact martial arts, then make sure your head gear protects your ears, and forehead and has ventilation holes. It’s surprising how much heat is generated in a sparring match. Sparring gear can be leather or synthetic. Both have their advantages. While leather is much more hard wearing, it can get VERY smelly, whereas vinyl materials are much easier to clean, but will wear more quickly.
If you’re training at home, you may want to invest in a heavy bag. These are unsurprisingly heavy, normally weighing around 50 kgs and up to 6 feet tall. They are great for practicing hand and foot techniques at varying heights and you can chain it to the garage ceiling. You can certainly get your heart rate using one of them.
The other piece of equipment you might need are martial arts shoes. These will be lightweight, with non slip soles and made of soft, malleable material. If you are doing breaking techniques, it’s a really good idea to practice with shoes on initially to avoid injury.
Club training equipment may also include punching and kicking air shields, smaller focus pads for practicing the accuracy of your kicks and plastic boards, which slot together and can be kicked apart and reassembled many, many times.
So these are the essentials in your arsenal of martial arts training equipment. Happy training. Stay safe and whole with the right gear.
